Ecuadorian 'Ganaderías'
Some words about
the background of the cattle.
Let me give you some essential information about the
Ecuadorian bull family, though I deliberately miss elder
names which no longer are fought in Quito and are only
fought in the Ecuadorian provinces, like Pedregal-Chiriboga,
Pedregal Tambo-Gangotena, Luis
de Ascázubi, José María
Plaza,...etc.
The ecuadorian bull comes from the pure spaniard
lineage of Vistahermosa. This branch-name gave the bull
genes to 'ganaderias' like: Juan Pedro Domecq,
Jandilla, Baltazar Ibán, Santa Coloma, and Manuel
Camacho. From these spanish goodwills comes the bull to
be fought in all the 'festejos': Cows and breeders were
imported in 1978 making a bloodshot to the elder
'criollo' cattle. Cattle that had origin in the
Basque and Navarrese castes that gave shine to the
'fiesta' since its colonial beginning. The new spaniard
flesh gave then life to the ecuadorian 'ganaderías'
consolidating the needed race.
Huagrahuasi -- meaning
bloody-field or blood-home in Kichwa (A dialect from the
Inca's tongue). Name from which come bulls from this and
other cattle like: Carlos Manuel Cobo
and Triana. Cows and stud-bulls
of Juan Pedro and Jandilla were imported, which inherited
by one side the traditional name of Veragua -- whom came
from The Royal Cattle of Ferdinand VII -- and by the
other side the cattle grounds of Vistahermosa in the
lineage of Ibarra, Parladé, Tamarón and, Conde de la
Corte. These branch cattle pastures in: The San José
Farms --one in Machachi/Pichincha and other in the
province of Cotopaxi-- and in Huagrahuasi located in
Tungurahua. The owners are : Marcelo Cobo of Huagrahuasi,
Carlos Manuel Cobo with the goodwill of his own name and
Jose Luis Cobo owner of Triana.
The genetically taylored-hairs for this branch are black,
brown, between dark-gray and dull-black, and, black with
white spots --less than a hand's length. The Juan Pedro
bull is not wide and small in legs, with horns not too
big or too small, big chest, long ribs and its current
characteristic is the bull´s best show quality, with a
dosis of bravury in a wizardry combination, giving birth
to a commercial easy-to-fight bull, greeded by all the
big known 'matadores'.
Other names to be known come from the spanish Baltazar
Ibán which itself proceeds from Los Guatales -Juan
Pedro- and the branch of Contreras. These is the
lineage brought by the remembered cattle raiser: Mr. Saul
Montenegro to Santa Rosa --now
managed by his son-in-law José Luis Bruzzone--, and also
the bulls of Campo Bravo and El
Pinar of The Garcia brothers. From the
races of Santa Rosa and Juan Pedro Domecq comes the
'ganadería': Santo Domingo
owned by Mr. Juan Domingo Cordovez.
The cattle of Santa Rosa pastures in Calacalí, province
of Pichincha and the two 'ganaderías' of The Garcia
Brothers: Luis Fernado and Victor, do it in Chimborazo.
The bulls of Santo Domingo pasture in Bolivar. The
dominance of this family gives black and brown hairs in
all the lineage. The bulls of this race are overall brave
with temper and a considerable dose of attacking quality.
'Toros' with a small thorax. Small, though with a nice
proportion and with loads of energy.
Corinto y Oro from Mr. Mario
Benalcazar has the races of Santa Coloma and Baltazar
Ibán. The Count of Santa Coloma bulls are from the
lineage of:Saltillo, Ibarra, and Picavea de Lesaca; in
its main branches giving way to some gray hairs over
another colour hair-cape and, a mix of black and white
hairs without forming any spot of the two colours. Bulls
from the Santacoloma background are particularly
homogeneous in their racial characteristics and
performance, with loads of trasmission about the danger
in the art of bullfighting, not exempt randomly of the
quality attack, and showing what they're going to do with
courage. Mario Benalcazar´s 'ganadería' pastures in the
province of Pichincha near Machachi.
Charrón, another of the
names, comes from the Spanish: Manuel Camacho Naveda,
that gave predominance to The Nuñez Lineage by the
branch proceeding from Duque de Braganza. A Portugese
cattle with a lot of awards, together with the original
blood of Villamarta and Veragua. It combinates the
'nobleza' of Braganza with the courage without hesitation
from Nuñez and the hotness of Villamarta. The Charrón
cattle from The Bermeo Vallejo brothers pasture in
the province of Cañar. These are the bulls in Ecuador´s
bullfighting.
